The wellness Pyramid is an excellent overall diet guideline. I have added the Wellness Pyramid on another tab for your convenience. But there are some crucial supplemental elements that is really tough and almost impossible to obtain from diet alone. The top supplements that I recommend are for every day use and some alternative natural supplements are listed below. Many of the supplements that we carry in Cedar Mill Chiropractic Clinic are made by Standard Process. I highly recommend these supplements and here are some reasons why.
The Importance of Whole Food Supplements
As a nation, we eat poor-quality foods that have been stripped of nutrients. We do not consume enough fresh fruits and vegetables. Many of us get our whole grains from instant rice, refined wheat breads, pastas, and cereal. We eat a tremendous amount of prepackaged, pre-made meals. One-quarter of Americans eat at fast food restaurants each day. Americans are overfed and undernourished. We eat plenty but we are still starving. The foods we eat are not providing our bodies with the nutrition it needs to survive and be healthy. We are starving our bodies and we are sick. We suffer from diabetes, heart attacks, obesity, and the list goes on and on.
There is good news. Given proper nutrition, the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. If properly fed and given the right nutrients, the human body is designed to repair itself. To do so, we need to eat a healthier diet, exercise, and take high-quality supplements made from whole foods. Whole food supplements supply our bodies with nutrients we are not getting from our diet, all the vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and phytonutrients that foods possess in a way that nature intended, in a whole food form.
Only whole food supplements complete the nutritional gap Whole food supplements are made by concentrating foods for use in supplements. When processed correctly, they supply a multitude of the plant's components. Foods provide nutrients that work synergistically. They work together to provide you with optimal nutrition for good health.
A word of advice: Not all whole food supplements are the same Many whole food supplements available in today's marketplace range in quality. Companies are riding the wave of supplement popularity rather than focusing on commitment and quality.
Every Day Supplements:
Omega-3 Fish Oil: The modern American diet is extremely low in life-sustaining omega-3 essential fatty acids. These necessary nutrients promote and support healthy cardiovascular, nervous, and immune system health, in addition to maintaining healthy eyes. Tuna Omega-3 Oil provides a rich source of long-chain omega-3 essential fatty acids, supplying DHA and EPA in a naturally occurring 5:1 ratio. Omega-3 Fish Oil is also very important for a child's development.
Probiotics: A gastrointestinal support product that combines digestive enzymes with normal intestinal flora. The combination of these ingredients assists in the breakdown of macronutrients and maintains a healthy intestinal environment.
Multivitamin: Catalyn is a multiple vitamin, mineral, and trace mineral concentrate formulated by Dr. Royal Lee in 1929. Catalyn is the antithesis of the "mega-dose" approach to nutritional supplementation. Dr. Lee summoned the whole of his considerable nutritional experience and know-how to provide a nutritional catalyst, a supplement using whole food ingredients which he named Catalyn. Dr. Lee's goal was to provide a food-based package of nutrients in the most potent and bioavailable form–its natural state. Ask your chiropractor for more details.
Vit.-D: Vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk of diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, certain cancers, and muscle and joint pain. As more and more research has been done on Vit.-D the recommended daily dose has increased to 1000-2000 IU a day..
Echinacea:
enhance immune system function (particularly non-specific immune function)
support and promote normal interferon production
support and promote healthy white blood cells
support healthy immune response following stress, sudden changes in weather or temperature
encourage healthy upper respiratory tissue
support and maintain healthy throat tissue

Caution: Contraindicated in known allergy to plants of the daisy family. Not to be used during pregnancy and lactation unless otherwise directed by a qualified health care professional.
Alternative Supplements:
Glucosamine: The bones, joints, and supportive connective tissue are living tissues that remain in a constant state of renewal and restoration. Glucosamine Synergy is a unique blend of glucosamine sulfate, Boswellia serrata extract, manganese, carbamide, and Protomorphogen™ and Cytosol™ extracts to support and maintain healthy bones and joints. It is important that if you are looking at other brands of glucosamine that you read the label and get the sulfate form.
Bromelain: Bromelain is an enzymes found naturally in the juice and stems of pineapples. Called a proteolytic enzyme, bromelain is believed to help with the digestion of protein. Bromelain is a good natural anti-inflammatory for pain or conditions such as sprain/strains and arthritis. In fact bromelain was found to be as effective then over the counter anti-inflammatories without the major side effects.
Vit.-C: Vit.-C is an important antioxidant and has long been recognized as an important nutritional compound essential for supporting the immune, cardiovascular, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and hematopoietic systems. Vit.-C is also know to help with post exercise muscle soreness. If you are performing in a strenuous event take up to 3000mg two days in advance and continue for several days after completing the activity. If you happen to forget to plan ahead, increased Vit.-C the day of the event and/or after will still be beneficial.
